1. Proposed B-cycle 2.0 - consultation now open
The Battery Stewardship Council (BSC) is consulting on possible changes to the B-cycle scheme design. B-cycle participation will remain voluntary and there are concurrent workstreams underway through the Environment Ministers forum. The B-cycle review process is attuned to these proceses.
Further information is available in the B-cycle Scheme Review Consultation Paper.
In summary, the BSC is asking for industry feedback by 2 August 2024 on these possible changes:
Increasing scope
any loose batteries (<60kg) including portable energy storage
possible inclusion of embedded batteries such as vapes not covered by existing scheme
New rebate structures (payments to accredited participants)
Increases in collection and sorting rebates
Processing rebates will be set individually for each chemistry
New levy structure (payments from importers and manufacturers)
Levy will be set by chemistry, ranging from $1/kg for NiMH and Alkaline/Zinc Carbon to a high of $20/kg for lithium primary
Annual review of rebates and levies to maintain cost recovery
New methods of accreditation - different contracting methods to support service delivery
BSC spending on communications, containers, button battery safety, assist with transport compliance and other incentives to support community initiatives to increase battery recycling
Once feedback is received, BSC will refine the proposed B-cycle design and conduct further consultation as needed. The final approach is subject to BSC Board approval and then submitted to the ACCC for reauthorisation, with a view to launching B-cycle 2.0 in July 2025.
2. Join global battery recyclers at the 2024 Battery Summit
International interest in ABRI’s 2024 Australian Battery Recycling & Manufacturing Summit is growing. This year’s attendance already includes Australian representatives of major international battery recycling and critical minerals recovery companies.
Don’t miss out on this year’s event which is exploring investment, innovation and best practice in Australia’s battery recycling and manufacturing industry. Christian Bauer, P3 Group - Europe, will be sharing his insights on experiences in the northern hemisphere.
