2. CWLTH CONSULTATION ON RECYCLING OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC PROUDCTS

The Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) is undertaking an electronic stewardship work program.

Over 500,000 tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) is generated every year and this is projected to grow to nearly one million tonnes by 2035. Improving Australia’s end-of-life management of electrical equipment has to start with products through their design, manufacturer, import, sale and consumption, and not just when the product is thrown out.

Around half of e-waste in Australia is recycled, mainly through the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS), with the rest being landfilled or sent overseas.

Following recommendation 15 of the review of the repealed Product Stewardship Act 2011, the Government committed to consult with stakeholders to assess the options, costs, and benefits of developing a product stewardship arrangement (including recycling at end of life) for electrical and electronic equipment, not currently covered by the NTCRS.

The department has established a taskforce to drive a national consultation process to better understand e-waste in Australia and identify potential e-stewardship opportunities.

The department is now moving forward to our roundtable discussions with government, researchers, non-government organisations and industry members that cover design, manufacture, import, retail, and recyclers, as well as consumers.

Register on the department’s website at Waste electrical and electronic equipment consultation | Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment to be part of important conversations to identify innovative electronic stewardship solutions, that create strong environmental, social and economic outcomes.
