1. LETTER TO ABRI FROM VICTORIAN EPA REGARDING USED LEAD ACID BATTERIES (ULAB)

The Victorian EPA has written to ABRI about the practicalities around handling of small numbers of used lead acid batteries (ULAB) destined for consolidation and eventual reprocessing at a licenced premises under the new environmental regulatory protection framework which commenced 1 July 2021. The letter is provided below and notes their approach to regulation and that over the next 8-12 months the EPA will assess whether there are more proportionate regulatory tools to better manage risks to human health and the environment in particular circumstances.

Meeting with EPA – 30 September 3-4pm

The EPA will meet with ABRI and other interested ULAB stakeholders on 30 September from 3-4pm to discuss next steps. ABRI members interested in attending should email the ABRI Secretariat at secretariat@batteryrecycling.org.au.

2. REQUEST FOR BLACK MASS FROM LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

Clean TeQ Water is evaluating whether their continuous ion exchange technology has  advantages in the recycling of Ni and Co in black mass from Li-ion batteries.  They are working in partnership with Sunrise Energy Metals (https://www.sunriseem.com/) to develop a process that takes black mass as an input and produces a sufficiently purified Ni and Co liquor to feed into the Sunrise refinery.

In order to carry out their evaluation, they need a sample (a few kg) of representative black mass (mechanically-processed NMC batteries consisting mainly of cathode and anode material, with traces of electrolyte, foils and other materials) for laboratory testwork.

If you are able to assist, please reach out to Adam Fishmann, Principal Chemist – Hydrometallurgy, Clean TeQ Water Limited at afischmann@cleanteqwater.com.
