JOIN US IN SYDNEY TO IDENTIFY CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR HARMONISATION STRATEGY

Following our successful meetings with the Hon Ministers Sussan Ley and Trevor Evans, ABRI is planning to prepare a submission with recommendations for achieving harmonisation across states and across chemistries for storage and transport of batteries at the end of their life.   In preparation ABRI plans to develop a strategic approach to inform the process.  This will involve:

  • An optional 1 hour online working group meeting on January 29th to refine the agenda for a full day workshop.
  • A full day workshop at the Breakfast Point Country Club to be held in Sydney on February 11th.
  • An optional 1 day follow-up meeting at Ramcar in Sydney on February 12th to prepare the draft submission and refine our key messages.

COAG SEEKING INPUT ON PHASING OUT CERTAIN WASTE EXPORTS

On 9 August 2019 at the meeting of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), Australia’s First Ministers agreed Australia should establish a timetable to ban the export of waste plastic, paper, glass and tyres, while building Australia’s capacity to generate high value recycled commodities and associated demand.

While batteries are not part of this immediate agenda, ABRI will be submitting a short submission to ensure that we convey our key messages regarding export.  Primary that ABRI supports onshore recycling where there is capacity and variable markets for the materials.

ABRI members are encouraged to submit their own perspectives to the government and to let us know if there are any pressing issues they would like us to convey in our submission.  Feedback to ABRI will be needed by January 28th in order for us to prepare our submission.

OUTCOMES OF CSIRO CIRCULAR ECONOMY WORKSHOP

In December ABRI attended a workshop facilitated by Think Place on behalf of CSIRO to “explore how we might catalyse a national dialogue on the circular economy to drive awareness, policy development, investment and partnerships to close the gaps. The aim was to identify key opportunities and intervention points to facilitate a circular economy transition through policy, partnership and investment and supported by scientific innovation.”  The Executive Summary is provided for members on the Members Only area on the ABRI website.
