1. PRESENTATION (8 FEB) – LITHIUM BATTERIES & THE AUSTRALIAN DANGEROUS GOODS CODE (ADGC) |
 |
It was great to see so many ABIA/ABRI members at the very informative session on navigating ADGC requirements for transporting lithium batteries – new, used and damaged/defective. The session covered:
- Lithium battery classifications
- Special provisions for lithium batteries
- Preparing batteries for transport – packaging
- Commentary on state of charge
- Controls in transport – transport documents, placarding, training/instruction/supervision, load restraint, segregation, licensing and other emergency requirements
- Major structural review of the ADGC
NSW EPA Principal Technical Advisor – Dangerous Goods, Matt Arkell, gave an overview of lithium battery transport requirements under the ADGC.
Presentation – NSW EPA lithium battery transport – 8 February 2023
National Transport Commission Manager Legislative Maintenance, Debra Kirk, gave an overview of the major structural review of the ADGC which is currently underway. There is more on this project in this newsletter – see item 5.

5. RESTRUCTURING THE AUSTRALIAN DANGEROUS GOODS CODE - CLASSIFYING DANGEROUS GOODS |
 |
The National Transport Commission (NTC) is undertaking a major review of the structure and content of the Australian Code for the transport of dangerous goods by road & rail (ADG Code). The NTC has established a project page on the their website as a central point for finding information and sharing consultation papers.
Consultation is current open on a proposed redraft of Part 2 of the Code, which classifies dangerous Goods – Draft revised ADGC Part 2 – Classifications.
Over the next 12 months, the National Transport Commission is seeking industry feedback on various issues related to the redrafting of the Code. The first two papers for consultation are now available and discussed in more detail below. Of most interest to ABRI members is working paper 1, which includes a discussion of a proposal to provide greater clarity around substances in class 8 (e.g. lead) and class 9 (e.g. lithium).

7. BUILDING THE VOICE OF THE BATTERY RECYCLING INDUSTRY – JOIN THE ABRI COMMS WORKING GROUP |
 |
Thanks to those who’ve reached out to join ABRI’s communications working group.
For those who’d still like to join, this is a great opportunity to promote the battery recycling industry and meet fellow ABRI members – join ABRI’s new communications working group to strengthen the industry’s voice and raise awareness about the step change underway across the industry. The working group will develop a comms strategy, key messages about the industry and update the ABRI website to focus on B2B business development.
Email ABRI’s CEO, Katharine Hole, if you are interested in participating.
