LITHIUM AUSTRALIA TAKES MAJOR STAKE IN BATTERY RECYCLER

Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT) has extended its equity in Envirostream Australia Pty Ltd (‘Envirostream’), the nation’s first mixed-battery recycler, to 90% (see ASX announcement).

Round two of Sustainability Victoria’s E-waste Infrastructure Grants is now open for applications.

There is up to $2 million available to improve the capability and capacity of the industry to reprocess e-waste and further fund facilities that ensure the safe collection and storage of e-waste across the state.

GOVERNMENT-BACKED CONSORTIUM TO DEVELOP AUSTRALIAN TRAM BATTERY

In Australia, an ambitious $5 million project to develop a fast-charge battery for transportation applications, trams in particular, has commenced.

Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT) announced to the ASX that the consortium involved – which includes CSIRO, Australia’s leading scientific research organisation, and Lithium Australia subsidiaries VSPC and Soluna Australia – is to be co-funded by the Australian federal government through its Co-operative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) programme.

US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT HELPING INDUSTRY UNDERSTAND THE RULES ON HANDLING LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

Batteries from consumer electronics are being increasingly regulated because they can be a problematic material in the recycling stream. United States experts recently laid out federal rules for transporting lithium-ion batteries destined for recycling or disposal.

TECHNICAL AND COST ISSUES POSE CHALLENGES TO THE RE-USE AND RECYCLING OF SPENT BATTERIES FROM PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES. 

A recent study commissioned by API appraised the nascent business of recycling and reusing batteries from electric vehicles (EV) in North America. The effort involved an extensive literature search as well as interviews with industry representatives to: (a) identify the processes employed for the reuse and recycling of EV batteries, and (b) evaluate available information on the technical, environmental, energy and cost issues associated with EV battery reuse and recycling.
